Officers Save Residents From South Side Building Fire

    CHICAGO — Patrol officers escorted six people to safety out of a residential fire early Friday morning, police said. reports that the fire occurred in a six-unit building in the 400 block of East 66th Street in Grand Crossing around 12:15 a.m., according to police.

    During routine neighborhood checks, officers saw smoke coming out of the window of a first-floor apartment.

    The officers notified dispatchers and entered the building through the front door, police said.

    Six people, including an elderly handicapped resident, were escorted out of the building after police knocked on doors of individual units.

    The residents were placed in police cars while the fire was extinguished, police said. There were no injuries reported and most of the residents were able to return to their homes.

    The cause of the fire is under investigation.
