Jury Selection at Beavers Tax Trial Expected to Continue

(AP) — Jury selection at the trial of an influential Chicago-area politician is expected to continue.

The judge presiding over William Beavers' case told attorneys to reconvene Tuesday.

The 77-year-old Cook County commissioner has pleaded not guilty to diverting thousands of dollars from his campaign coffers for personal use without reporting it.

Potential jurors filled out questionnaires Monday. But Judge James Zagel agreed to cut short the proceedings after Beavers' lawyers said a member of their defense team, Victor Henderson, was ill.

Jury selection typically takes a day or two, and attorneys had talked about being ready for openings by Tuesday. But that may not happen now until later this week.

Beavers told reporters Monday he plans to testify. He says he'll tell jurors he repaid all the money to his campaign.
