It's been a bloody start to the Thanksgiving holiday with one man who tried to stop a fight between a husband and wife on Wednesday night stabbed to death and at least eight people -- including a 15-year-old girl who suffered a gunshot wound to the head -- wounded in shootings around the city since Wednesday afternoon.
William Terry, 55, was stabbed when he tried to intervene in an argument between a married couple in the Roseland neighborhood about 7:11 p.m. in the 10300 block of South Forest Avenue, authorities said. A man who was arguing with his wife took a kitchen knife and stabbed Terry multiple times throughout his body, police said.
Terry, of the 14100 block of South Tracy Avenue in Riverdale, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The man who stabbed him fled the scene in a van, police said, and as of Thursday about noon he was not in custody. The offender's wife was not injured, police said.
The most recent shooting happened about 6:18 a.m. on Thursday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The 46-year-old victim told police that he was walking in the 100 block of North Lorel Avenue when he heard the sound of gunfire, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. The man started to run, felt pain in his arm, and realized he had been shot, Perez said. He was taken to Loretto Hospital, where his condition was stable, police said. He could provide police with no information on the shooter or shooters.
About 2:25 a.m. Thursday in the Wicker Park neighborhood, a man was shot twice in the legs, police said.
About 11 p.m. on Wednesday, an 18-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. A dark colored vehicle drove by the man in the 6400 block of South Normal Avenue and shots were fired, striking the man in the upper-right arm, police said. The man was listed in "stable" condition at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
About 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the head in the Washington Park neighborhood.
She was inside her home in the 1100 block West 104th Street when she was struck by a bullet shot from outside, police said. She was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center.
Earlier in the evening, a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were shot multiple times about 5:15 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Campbell, according to police.
